Editorial Policy & Auditing Methodology
Our mission is to establish the highest standard of optical accuracy, regulatory transparency, and consumer protection for Canadian light therapy buyers.
Optical Spectrometry & Irradiance Benchmark Standards
The single biggest issue in consumer photobiomodulation is optical irradiance inflation. Many manufacturers utilize inexpensive solar power meters (e.g. Tenmars TM-206) to measure light output. Solar meters are calibrated for broadband sunlight (400nmβ1100nm) and thermal conversion, resulting in sensor saturation that inflates LED irradiance readings by 200% to 300%.
π How We Audit Optical Metrics
Electromagnetic Field (EMF) & Optical Flicker Standards
Because red light therapy panels are used in close proximity to the head, eyes, and torso, electrical safety and optical comfort are critical parameters.
Zero-EMF at Recommended Distance
We audit EMF emission tests conducted using tri-axis Gauss meters and electric field meters. High-quality devices must register <0.1 Β΅T (0.1 mG) magnetic field and 0 V/m electric field at standard operating distance (6 inches).
Zero-Flicker Constant Current Drivers
Pulse-width modulation (PWM) in low-grade LED power drivers causes rapid sub-visual flicker that induces headaches and eye strain. We prioritize continuous, ripple-free constant-current LED drivers with a Flicker Index <0.02.
Health Canada MDALL Auditing Protocol
Under the Canadian Food and Drugs Act and Medical Devices Regulations (SOR/98-282), devices marketed with medical or therapeutic claims (e.g. arthritis relief, pain management, tissue repair) are classified as Class II Medical Devices.
We do not accept self-proclaimed marketing badges or US FDA clearances as proof of Canadian compliance. Every brand claiming therapeutic efficacy is cross-referenced against the live Medical Devices Active Licence Listing (MDALL).
| Licence / Framework | Canadian Legal Authority | What Our Editors Verify |
|---|---|---|
| Class II MDL | SOR/98-282 Active Licence | Specific hardware model has passed ISO 13485 quality system and clinical safety audits by Health Canada (e.g. Kala MDL 112661, Infraredi MDL 108459). |
| MDEL Permit | Establishment Licence | Importers and distributors licensed to handle medical goods; does not evaluate device efficacy. |
| REDA Compliance | Radiation Emitting Devices | General wellness and cosmetic panels that make zero medical claims (e.g. Rouge Care G4 Series). |
Canadian Landed Cost & Warranty Logistics
A product review that only considers US dollar MSRP fails Canadian readers. We build complete financial models for every reviewed item:
- Foreign Currency Exchange: Calculating true Canadian Dollar prices, factoring in the 2.5% foreign transaction fee typical of major Canadian bank credit cards.
- CBSA Customs Duties: Classifying equipment under Tariff Heading 9018.90 (0% duty rate).
- GST / HST / PST: Applying province-specific sales tax assessments (from 5% in Alberta to 15% in Atlantic Canada).
- Courier Brokerage Fees: Calculating standard customs clearance surcharges imposed by UPS and FedEx Ground for non-DDP cross-border shipments ( to CAD).
- Domestic Canadian Warranty Depots: Auditing whether a brand provides local Canadian repair depots (e.g., Montreal, Etobicoke, Edmonton) or forces customers to pay exorbitant cross-border shipping fees for warranty service.
Affiliate Disclosure & Editorial Independence
Red Light Therapy Canada is an independently owned and operated digital publication. To support our ongoing specification research, website infrastructure, and investigative reporting, we participate in affiliate marketing programs.
When you click links on our site and make a purchase, we may earn an affiliate commission at no additional cost to you. In many cases, our negotiated discount codes (e.g. DARYLSTUBBS or SYNCTHERAPY) provide exclusive Canadian discounts of 5% to 15%.
Our Editorial Independence Guarantee
Our affiliate relationships never compromise our editorial integrity:
- βWe do not accept paid placements or sponsored articles masquerading as independent reviews.
- βBrands cannot pay to alter review scores, hide spectrometer lab results, or fake Health Canada licence statuses.
- βProducts that fail safety, flicker, or irradiance audit benchmarks receive low ratings regardless of commercial terms.
Fact-Checking, Re-Audits & Corrections Policy
Photobiomodulation technology and regulatory compliance are dynamic. We maintain a systematic re-audit protocol:
- Quarterly MDALL Re-Audits: We re-query the Health Canada active licence registry every 90 days to verify that all listed MDL licences remain in good standing.
- Real-Time Price & Promo Auditing: Our team continuously monitors domestic stock levels, discount codes, and CAD currency fluctuations.
- Reader & Manufacturer Corrections: If you believe any specification, licence number, or pricing data published on our site is inaccurate or outdated, we encourage you to contact our editorial desk directly.
